Robert Sherrod was born in 1941 in New York City, the son of a renowned architect. He attended The Collegiate School in New York City and graduated in 1960. He attended Harvard University where he received a BS in classical studies and a BS in economics in 1963. He has lived in Hong Kong since 1965, working for various government agencies. In 1970 he moved to London where he worked at the Bank of England until 1973
From 1977 to 1985 he worked for the World Bank. During these years, he wrote his first novel "The Hong Kong Tattooist". In 1985, Robert Sherrod returned to Hong Kong where he has continued his writing career ever since. He is married with two children and lives on the island of Kowloon with his wife, Joanne, an artist who has exhibited her work at the National Museum of China and the Museum of Art. His hobbies include reading, fishing, cooking and travel.
